A bubble point pore analyzer is a laboratory instrument used to determine the pore size distribution and integrity of porous materials, especially membrane filters. It works by measuring the pressure required for a gas to pass through a wetted sample. Because the liquid inside the pores resists gas flow, the pressure at which bubbles first appear provides valuable information about the largest pores in the material. This method is widely used in filtration, pharmaceutical processing, water treatment, biotechnology, and quality control applications.The basic principle of a bubble point pore analyzer is straightforward. First, the sample is fully wetted with a liquid that has low surface tension and is compatible with the material being tested. After wetting, gas pressure is gradually increased on one side of the sample. At low pressure, the liquid remains in the pores and blocks the gas. As the pressure rises, the gas eventually overcomes the surface tension of the liquid in the largest pore, causing the first continuous stream of bubbles to emerge. This pressure is called the bubble point. Using the relationship between pressure, surface tension, and pore diameter, the analyzer calculates the maximum pore size. Smaller pores require higher pressure to empty, so the instrument may also determine mean flow pore size and overall pore distribution.A bubble point pore analyzer usually includes a pressure control system, a sample holder, sensors, and software for data collection and analysis. The pressure control unit allows precise adjustment of gas pressure during testing. The sample holder secures the membrane or porous material in place and prevents leakage around the edges. Sensors continuously monitor pressure and detect the moment gas begins to pass through the sample. Modern systems often use digital interfaces and automated software to improve test accuracy, repeatability, and reporting.This instrument offers several advantages. It provides a non-destructive or minimally destructive method for evaluating membrane structure, making it suitable for routine inspection and research. It is relatively fast compared with microscopic imaging methods and can deliver reliable results under standardized conditions. Bubble point testing is especially useful for verifying filter quality, checking consistency between production batches, and confirming whether a membrane meets specific performance requirements. It is also valuable for detecting defects such as oversized pores, damaged areas, or incomplete wetting.However, accurate testing depends on proper sample preparation. The sample must be completely wetted, and the correct wetting liquid must be selected for the material. If the liquid does not fully penetrate the pores or if air is trapped inside, the measured bubble point may be inaccurate. Temperature, liquid surface tension, and gas pressure stability can also affect the results. For this reason, operators must follow test standards carefully and maintain the instrument regularly.In summary, a bubble point pore analyzer is an important tool for characterizing porous materials and ensuring product quality.
